Montcortes

Village of the municipality of Baix Pallars , in the southernmost area of the Pallars Sobirà region of Lleida, headquarters of Cavalls Wakan.

Montcortes Lake

Estany de Montcortès , the only lake of karstic origin and not a glacier in the Pyrenees, with a great wealth of fauna and landscape.

Pla de Corts

The Pla de Corts, where Montcortès u Cavalls Wakan is located, is a plateau located on the waters of the Noguera Pallaresa river and the Vall Fosca, in the municipality of Baix Pallars with a privileged location over the Collegats Gorge and under the protection of the Sleeping Geganta.

Vall Fosca

The Vall Fosca , with the river Flamisell  from north to south, is the largest water reserve in Catalonia. With more than 30  lakes at its head that can be accessed by cable car that offers the adventure of reaching 2,200m in 14 min. overcoming a drop of 450m.

La Pobleta de Bellveí

Going down to the Vall Fosca, to the west, from Cavalls Wakan, we find La Pobleta de Bellveí.

It is located at the bottom of the Flamisell valley, next to the L-503 road, at the southern end of the Vall Fosca.

Peramea 

Going down from Cavalls Wakan towards the east, we find the vila closa of Peramea , declared  Cultural Asset of National Interest.  

Gerri de la  Sal

Going down from Cavalls Wakan towards the Noguera Pallaresa river,  upon reaching the valley, we find Gerri de la Sal with its 12th century Monastery and salt pans of medieval origin.

Fairy chimneys

These are original geological formations in the form of columns with a large rock on top.

Some indigenous tribes  in North America consider them to be the petrified remains of ancient beings punished for bad behavior.

Megalithic dolmens

The dolmen are megalithic constructions with large and heavy stone slabs. 

The presence of these megalithic constructions in the surroundings of Cavalls Wakan indicates the presence of settlements in the area since the Neolithic.

The rivers

The Noguera Pallaresa river and its tributaries, such as the Flamisell, are the backbone of Pallars Sobirà and Pallars Jussà around which the life of these two regions is articulated. 

Collegats Gorge

The Collegats Gorge , southeast of Montcortès, a natural passage between the Pallars Jussà and the Sobirà, formed by the Noguera Pallaresa river as it makes its way through the rock walls.

Mont Rebei

A few kilometers from Cavalls Wakan, we find the Boumort National Reserve , between the valleys of the Noguera Pallaresa and Segre rivers.

Aigüestortes NP
